Never read alzheimers_disease, unspecified_dementia, senile_degeneration_of_brain or other_degenerative_nervous_system_diseases as a trend after 2013: coding has moved deaths among them since 2014. Causes nest, so never sum num_deaths or num_population across causes; for one cause, combine places or groups by adding the counts of the rows that have one: SUM(num_deaths) * 100000 / SUM(num_population) over rows where num_deaths is not NULL is their crude death rate (pooled_rates), which equals death_rate_per_100k wherever OASIS publishes that rate. Never compute it for a single row: where OASIS withholds a rate (1-4 deaths), that would rebuild what OASIS withholds. Race rows the race mask NULLs (county-years with over 20% of ADRD deaths of unknown race or ethnicity) are left out of both sums, so a race group pooled over counties in those years is not Georgia's: use Georgia's own row. Compare causes only within one level: the 7 groups with each other, or the subtypes of one group. Pin demographic = 'all' and cause = 'all' for totals. The mortality cause topics count the same deaths: never add figures across them. Causes nest: never add them. From 2014 coding moved deaths from unspecified_dementia to alzheimers_disease, then to senile_degeneration_of_brain: only cause all is a trend. OASIS withholds rates on 1-4 deaths. race_unknown is our count, with no rate. Race groups are NULL in 35 county-years (2000-2006) with over 20% unknown race. Age-adjusted rates are OASIS's: weighted averages of age-specific rates with the year 2000 U.S. standard million as weights, so places and groups with different age mixes compare fairly; they never add or average across rows. OASIS publishes every count, however small, and withholds rates based on 1-4 events (NULL here); the platform adds no small-cell suppression of its own and never recomputes a withheld rate. A group with no residents in a place (num_population 0) has no rate (NULL): OASIS shows 0 there, but a rate on no population is undefined and would rank as the lowest (our mask; the count stays 0 unless the race mask NULLs it). 56% of rows with at least one death have no age-adjusted rate, every one of them on 1-4 deaths (small counties, small groups and rare causes). Dementia deaths moved between causes in 2014-2016 (our reading: a change in how they were coded, not in how many people died): Georgia's alzheimers_disease nearly doubled, from 2,042 in 2013 to 4,017 in 2016, while unspecified_dementia fell from 4,225 to 2,354; all, every ADRD death, kept its course (7,356 deaths in 2013, 8,093 in 2016; age-adjusted 90.7, 94.7, 90.9, 90.9 in 2013-2016). From 2014 on, deaths also moved into senile_degeneration_of_brain (G31.1, in other_degenerative_nervous_system_diseases): 5 Georgia deaths in 2013, 75 in 2014, 354 in 2016 and 3,947 in 2025, while alzheimers_disease's age-adjusted rate fell from 47.8 (2018) to 30.9 (2025) and unspecified_dementia's from 21.7 to 11.4; the three together stayed between 73.9 and 80.2 a year in 2013-2025 (86.9 in 2020, the COVID-19 year), so this is probably coding too (our reading). Read none of the three, nor other_degenerative_nervous_system_diseases, as a trend after 2013: follow dementia over time with cause = 'all'. The 7 groups never overlap and add up to all exactly. Within alzheimers_disease and other_degenerative_nervous_system_diseases the listed subtypes never overlap but need not add up: Alzheimer's subtypes fall 1 to 24 deaths short of it on 183 rows, all in 2009-2014; the other degenerative subtypes fall short every year (Georgia: 2 to 88 deaths a year), probably mostly frontotemporal dementia (ICD-10 G31.0), which has no subtype here (our reading). The subtypes follow how specifically the cause was written: alzheimers_disease_late_onset rose from 44 deaths in 2015 to 806 in 2025 while alzheimers_disease_unspecified went from 3,557 to 3,043, so don't read subtypes as trends. vascular_dementia is erratic before 2008 (Georgia: 7 deaths in 2001, none in 2002-2004, 48 in 2005, 207 in 2006, 73 in 2007), probably coding too (our reading). OASIS's list has 9 more causes with no death in any place, year or group, left out here rather than served as zeros: dementia_in_other_diseases and its five subtypes, frontotemporal_dementia, neurocognitive_disorder_with_lewy_bodies, corticobasal_degeneration. They name codes deaths are not coded to (F02, never an underlying cause, and ICD-10-CM codes used for hospital records); Lewy body deaths are in other_specified_degenerative_nervous_system_diseases (G31.8) and frontotemporal dementia in the group's unlisted remainder (our reading). Race groups follow the platform convention from OASIS's race x ethnicity cross: hispanic is Hispanic of any race; white, black, asian, native_american (American Indian or Alaska Native), pacific_islander (Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander) and multiracial are non-Hispanic. race_unknown is our calculation, the total minus those seven (unknown ethnicity, or non-Hispanic of unknown race), so the race groups add up to all wherever the race mask (below) leaves them; it has no population and so no rate. Hispanic ethnicity is under-reported on death certificates (OASIS's known-issues note cites a 35% drop between Hispanic at birth and Hispanic at death in linked Georgia records), so hispanic counts and rates may be low. Few ADRD deaths fall in the smaller race groups (Georgia 2024: native_american 7, pacific_islander 5, multiracial 23), so their rates swing widely, and the smaller groups' death series have recording breaks before 2015 (deaths_by_cause_nchs_rankable). From 2013 on, multiracial rates (where published) stay far below every other group's (Georgia 2024: 11.1 against 89.4 for all), probably because death certificates record more than one race far less often than population estimates do (our reading). Where race or ethnicity is unknown for more than 20% of a place-year's ADRD deaths (race_unknown / all), the race groups' counts and rates for that place and year are NULL (our mask, OASIS's own 20% threshold for missing items): each group's count would miss its share of the unknowns, so its rate runs low and its trend follows the recording, not the group. The all, sex and race_unknown rows are kept, so the unknown share stays visible. It applies to 35 county-years (19 counties, 2000-2006, never Georgia), on every cause: in those years a race group's county deaths can add up to less than Georgia's race row, which counts every county. OASIS also warns that 2008 deaths may mismatch cause and demographics (collection and processing issues; https://oasis.state.ga.us/dtt/content/KDIADRDMort.htm). num_population is OASIS's own population (its population module) for the place, year and group, the denominator of every crude rate (num_deaths / num_population x 100,000 reproduces each published crude rate); the race groups' populations add to all, as do male and female. Deaths are placed by county of residence as OASIS geocodes it. 2025, the newest year, carries the same Alzheimer's deaths as OASIS's Mortality module, which added it on 2026-07-29; OASIS marks no year provisional. Counties add up to Georgia, except a race group's deaths in a year the race mask NULLs some of its county rows.
