County rates are spatially smoothed (a Local Empirical Bayes estimate borrowing from neighboring counties, which steadies small counties and pulls them toward their neighbors); the Georgia rate is not smoothed. A modeled estimate: no deaths, population or interval is published, so it cannot be pooled across places. Not comparable with all-age, single-year heart disease death rates (OASIS). Small groups can get extreme estimates, preserved as CDC publishes them: no rate is 0, and the lowest is 3.3, multiracial women in Cobb County, 2022-2024 (year 2024); the highest is 1,813.6, Black men in Clinch County, 2019-2021 (year 2021).","valid_values":null,"example":346.4,"unit":"rate_per_population","value_min":null,"value_max":null,"null_meaning":"Withheld by CDC ('~', Insufficient Data): too few deaths or people in this place and group over the three years for a reliable rate. Read years as 3-year windows that share two years with their neighbors, never as annual change. Never sum or average rates across counties, races or sexes; for Georgia read the state row. Race groups differ before and from 2021 (asian_pacific_islander, then asian, pacific_islander and multiracial). Read directly with DuckDB over Parquet. Every rate is CDC's modeled estimate (age-standardized; county rates spatially smoothed), not deaths divided by population.","limitations":"Heart disease death rates here are modeled estimates for adults 35 and older: CDC age-standardizes every rate and spatially smooths county rates, borrowing deaths from neighboring counties (the Georgia row is not smoothed). Each year is a 3-year window named by its last year (2024 = 2022-2024 deaths), and consecutive windows share two of their three years, so they are not an annual series; there is no 2020-2022 window (no 2022). Rates are deaths per 100,000 adults 35 and older a year, directly age-standardized to the 2000 U.S. standard population, from death certificates (NVSS; ICD-10 I00-I09, I11, I13, I20-I51); county rates are smoothed with a Local Empirical Bayes method. Every window's dataset description states the same method (3-year average, age-standardized, county rates spatially smoothed), and its metadata the same ICD codes; CDC's statistical methods page names one age standard and one smoother and mentions no change between releases. The one change found in the rows between windows is the race groups (below). On data.cdc.gov the rows of the five windows 2015-2017 through 2019-2021 were last updated in January-February 2025, after those datasets were first posted (whether values changed then cannot be told). Years 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2024 (windows 2018-2020 through 2022-2024) include COVID-19 pandemic years (2020, 2021 or 2022); only 2017, 2018 and 2019 are pre-pandemic. Race groups: hispanic is Hispanic of any race and every other group is non-Hispanic, as CDC's atlas shows them (the window files do not say so). Through 2018-2020 (year 2020) the files have four race groups besides Hispanic, with Asian and Pacific Islander combined (asian_pacific_islander); from 2019-2021 (year 2021) six, with asian, pacific_islander and multiracial separate. Race-specific rates are not comparable across that change (the all-race rates are), and never add or compare asian_pacific_islander with asian. That the change is a switch from bridged-race to single-race groups is our inference from the group lists; CDC's window datasets do not state it. Georgia's multiracial rate is the lowest of any group's (2022-2024: 40.6 against 346.4 for all races), probably because death certificates record more than one race less often than population estimates do (our reading). The 43 published county multiracial rates (in 8 counties) range from 3.3 to 368.4 (men in DeKalb County, 2019-2021), and one is above the all-race rate of the same county, sex and year. Don't compare multiracial rates with other groups. CDC withholds a rate ('Insufficient Data') where too few deaths or people over the window make it unreliable: NULL here, never filled in or derived. The all-race, both-sexes rate is published for Georgia and every county in every year. Counties with a both-sexes rate, by group (fewest-most over the years): white 159, Black 155-156, Hispanic 56-93, Asian 42-46, Asian and Pacific Islander 32-40, multiracial 4-8. Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander rates are published only for Georgia (both sexes in 2021, 2023 and 2024); American Indian/Alaska Native rates only for Georgia (both sexes in every year, men in 2017 and 2018, women in 2017, 2018 and 2019) and Rabun County (both sexes in 2017, 2018 and 2021). Small groups can get extreme smoothed estimates, kept as CDC publishes them: no rate is 0, and the lowest is 3.3, multiracial women in Cobb County, 2022-2024 (year 2024); the highest is 1,813.6, Black men in Clinch County, 2019-2021 (year 2021). No deaths, population or confidence interval is published, so county rates cannot be summed, averaged or pooled into a regional rate, and the Georgia row (computed from all Georgia deaths, unsmoothed) is not an average of its counties. A smoothed county rate is pulled toward its neighbors', most for small counties and groups. Male and female rates are each age-standardized, so the both-sexes rate is not their average. Not comparable head to head with OASIS's deaths by cause (health/oasis/deaths_by_cause_nchs_rankable, Diseases of heart): those are single-year, all-age rates, unsmoothed and with counts; these are smoothed 3-year rates for adults 35 and older. CDC's separate 2000-2019 annual county series (a Bayesian spatiotemporal model, age bands 35-64 and 65+, a 2010 standard population) is a different product and not in this table. tract_geoid is always NULL.","null_semantics":{"suppressed_to_null":true,"zero_is_real":true},"available_years":[2017,2018,2019,2020,2021,2023,2024],"schema_hash":"062c7ddac7ac4ea43dc3bd32cb435f4fc128677f7985bf436a1e35224ae72d9e","tags":["health","centers for disease control and prevention, division for heart disease and stroke prevention, interactive atlas of heart disease and stroke","heart_disease_mortality"],"granularity_description":"One row per year, county_fips, tract_geoid, demographic, sex (geography columns are NULL at higher aggregation levels).","example_queries":[{"description":"Latest year (2024), counties detail","query":"SELECT * FROM heart_disease_mortality WHERE year = 2024 LIMIT 100"},{"description":"Filter by sex = female","query":"SELECT * FROM heart_disease_mortality WHERE sex = 'female' AND year = 2024 LIMIT 100"}],"foreign_keys":[{"column":"county_fips","target_object":"counties","target_columns":["county_fips"],"attribute_columns_added":["county_name"],"scope":"global"},{"column":"tract_geoid","target_object":"tracts","target_columns":["tract_geoid"],"attribute_columns_added":["tract_name"],"scope":"global"},{"column":"demographic","target_object":"demographics","target_columns":["demographic"],"attribute_columns_added":["demographic_label","demographic_category"],"scope":"global"}],"filters":[{"param":"year","kind":"year_exact","type":"integer","multi_value":false,"enum_enforced":false,"values":null},{"param":"year_min","kind":"year_range","type":"integer","multi_value":false,"enum_enforced":false,"values":null},{"param":"year_max","kind":"year_range","type":"integer","multi_value":false,"enum_enforced":false,"values":null},{"param":"detail","kind":"detail","type":"string","multi_value":false,"enum_enforced":true,"values":["counties","states"],"default":"counties"},{"param":"county_fips","kind":"foreign_key","column":"county_fips","type":"string","multi_value":true,"enum_enforced":false,"values":null},{"param":"tract_geoid","kind":"foreign_key","column":"tract_geoid","type":"string","multi_value":true,"enum_enforced":false,"values":null},{"param":"demographic","kind":"foreign_key","column":"demographic","type":"string","multi_value":true,"enum_enforced":true,"values":["all","white","black","hispanic","asian","pacific_islander","asian_pacific_islander","native_american","multiracial"]},{"param":"sex","kind":"categorical","column":"sex","type":"string","multi_value":true,"enum_enforced":true,"values":["all","male","female"],"has_total":true,"total_value":"all","requires_single_value":false,"nullable":false,"null_filter_token":null},{"param":"demographic_category","kind":"dimension_attribute","dimension":"demographics","column":"demographic_category","type":"string","multi_value":true,"enum_enforced":true,"values":["aggregate","disability","economic_status","esol","foster_care","gender","grade","homeless_status","migrant_status","military","race","sped"]}],"filter_hints":[],"non_additive":[],"partitions":[],"value_implications":[],"year_meaning":"year labels the last year of a 3-year window of heart disease deaths: 2017 = 2015-2017; 2018 = 2016-2018; 2019 = 2017-2019; 2020 = 2018-2020; 2021 = 2019-2021; 2023 = 2021-2023; 2024 = 2022-2024.
