Overview
Deaths from all causes - the number of residents who died - as used by the U.S. Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program (PEP), Vintage 2025, for Georgia and each of its 159 counties, estimate years 2021-2025 (each covering July 1 of the prior year through June 30, not a calendar year). Served as the death count and the published crude death rate per 1,000 residents (the headline metric). PEP builds the counts from National Center for Health Statistics death records to estimate population change; they differ from Georgia's own calendar-year death records.
Row grain: One row per year, county_fips, district_code, tract_geoid.
death_rate_per_1k — Death Rate per 1,000 (rate_per_population)

year | integer | — | — | no | Estimate year: covers July 1 of the prior year through June 30 of this year (2025 = July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025), not a calendar year. num_deaths | integer | — | yes | Residents who died during the estimate year (July 1 to June 30), all causes.Full description▾Deaths of residents from all causes during the estimate year (July 1 to June 30), as published by the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program (DEATHS), which builds them from NCHS death records by county of residence, with provisional totals and projections for the most recent months; from January 2024 on, county values are the statewide total spread by each county's 2023 pattern. Not Georgia's official calendar-year death count. The numerator of death_rate_per_1k; its population denominator is not served. | |
death_rate_per_1k | number | — | yes | Deaths per 1,000 residents during the estimate year (crude, not age-adjusted).Full description▾Crude death rate per 1,000 residents, served verbatim from the source (RDEATH): num_deaths divided by the average of the July 1 population estimates that begin and end the estimate year, times 1,000. Not age-adjusted, so it runs higher where the population is older. Comparable across counties of different sizes, which the raw count is not; no margin of error is published. Never average it across counties: a combined rate needs the counties' populations, which this table does not serve. |

Limitations
These are the deaths the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program (PEP) uses to estimate population change, not Georgia's official death statistics. year is the ESTIMATE year, July 1 of the prior year to June 30 (2025 = July 2024-June 2025), not a calendar year, so counts differ from Georgia's own calendar-year death records (DPH OASIS) and CDC WONDER. County figures for 2025 and half of 2024 are the state total spread by each county's 2023 pattern, not local counts. PEP also differs from the state's records in its inputs: it takes deaths by county of residence from National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) records, and for recent months it uses NCHS provisional state totals and its own short-term projections instead of final records. Vintage 2025's full-detail death records end with calendar 2023. From January 2024 on, the Census spread the provisional statewide totals across counties using each county's 2023 pattern, so county values for estimate year 2025 (and the January-June 2024 half of 2024) follow the statewide trend, not local deaths: never read a county's 2024-to-2025 change as a local trend. The next vintage will revise these years most. Every vintage restates the whole series: this table serves Vintage 2025 only (released March 2026), a future vintage will revise 2021-2025, and values must never be mixed with or differenced against an earlier vintage. The partial April-June 2020 period is not served. Deaths are from all causes. The rate is a CRUDE rate (not age-adjusted): deaths per 1,000 residents, computed by the Census on the average of the beginning and ending July 1 population estimates, so counties with older populations show higher rates; use age-adjusted rates (OASIS) to compare mortality risk. That average population is not served as a column (each row's is num_deaths x 1,000 / death_rate_per_1k), and county rates must never be averaged: a rate for several counties together is their summed deaths x 1,000 over their summed average populations. In 2021-2024, small counties' rates swing from year to year on a few deaths. PEP publishes point estimates only: there are no margins of error, no suppression and no NULLs, and every zero would be real. Counties reflect boundaries as of January 1, 2025; there is no school-district or tract geography. The state row is published separately, and the 159 county counts sum exactly to it in every year.
