Overview

The share of Georgia adolescents aged 13-17 who are up to date on each recommended vaccine (Tdap, MenACWY, HPV, polio, MMR, hepatitis B, varicella, hepatitis A) and on DPH's adolescent series, from all records of the cohort's five birth years in the Georgia Registry of Immunization Transactions and Services (GRITS), report years 2018-2025. Statewide, for all adolescents and one breakdown at a time by race, ethnicity, birth year and how the doses were covered (insurance type); by county for all adolescents, with DPH's flag for counties whose registry count is far from the expected population. The headline is the adolescent series share.

Row grain: One row per year, county_fips, tract_geoid, race, ethnicity, birth_year, insurance_type, vaccine.

Variables

Every column in the fact table. The code is the exact field name the API returns.

ColumnTypeUnitRangeNull?Description
yearYearinteger——noReport year: the cohort is every adolescent aged 13 to 17 in that calendar year, born January 1 of year minus 17 through December 31 of year minus 13 (2025: born 2008-2012), five birth years in all. Up to date means every dose was given by age 18 and recorded in GRITS; the report does not state the date of its registry extract.

raceRacestring——noDPH race group, regardless of ethnicity.
Full description
Race as DPH reports it, regardless of ethnicity: white, black (Black or African-American), asian, pacific_islander (Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander), native_american (American Indian or Alaska Native), other (Other Race) or unknown; 'all' = every adolescent. Hispanic adolescents are counted in their race group (often other or unknown), so 'white' includes Hispanic White adolescents: these are not the platform's demographic codes, whose race groups are non-Hispanic. The seven groups add up to the Georgia count. Statewide rows only; 'all' on county rows and on the Georgia total. One-way: a row with a value here has the other three breakdowns at 'all'.

Calendar year of birth, as a 4-digit string: five per report, year minus 17 (the oldest) to year minus 13; 'all' = all five. Age at the end of the report year is year minus birth_year, and the same birth year follows one cohort across reports. The five add up to the Georgia count. insurance_typeInsurance Typestring——noWho covered the adolescent's vaccine doses.
Full description
How the adolescent's recorded vaccine doses were covered, in DPH's words: only_public (public insurance only: Medicaid, PeachCare, and insurance for American Indians and Alaska Natives), only_private (any non-public insurance), only_insured_without_vaccine_coverage (private insurance that does not cover vaccines without a copayment or coinsurance), multiple_insurance_types (some doses covered by private insurance and some by public), uninsured, unknown, and any_public_insurance (at least one dose covered by public insurance), which overlaps only_public and multiple_insurance_types: never add it to the others. The six other types add up to the Georgia count. any_public_insurance is smaller than only_public plus multiple_insurance_types every year, so some adolescents with multiple types had no publicly covered dose (DPH's definition names only private-and-public mixes). Each vaccine: tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis, 1 dose), menacwy (meningococcal A, C, W, Y conjugate, 1), hpv (human papillomavirus, 2 or 3 by age at the first dose), ipv (polio, 3), mmr (measles, mumps, rubella, 2), hepb (hepatitis B, 3 doses, more than the series asks), varicella (2) and hepa (hepatitis A, 2). pct_up_to_dateShare Up to Datenumberproportion—yesShare of the adolescents up to date on the vaccine.
Full description
Share of the group's adolescents up to date on the vaccine (every dose given by age 18 and recorded in GRITS), DPH's published percent divided by 100, on the 0-1 scale (0.65 = 65%), published to 0.1 point. The number up to date is not published; num_adolescents times this share is our estimate, good to about 0.05% of the group.
num_adolescentsAdolescents in the registryintegercount—yesAdolescents in the group: GRITS records of the five birth years after DPH removed records with no childhood or adolescent vaccine, out-of-state, duplicate, test and birth-placeholder records and those of adolescents who died, as published ('Total by ...'; the Georgia total is the N in the report's chart title). The denominator of pct_up_to_date. Repeated on every vaccine row of a group. A count of registry records, not of Georgia's adolescents: the statewide count runs about 1.4 to 1.6 times the Census estimate of Georgians aged 13-17 (our comparison with the ACS 2020-2024 population aged 5-17 times 5/13), likely because records of adolescents who moved away stay in the registry (our reading; DPH does not say). A county's count covers only adolescents DPH assigned to it by address, not its population.

is_population_mismatchPopulation Mismatchboolean——yesTrue when DPH marks the county (*) because the adolescents it assigned to the county from GRITS addresses are at least 20% more or fewer than the expected adolescent population (from DPH's OASIS population data for the year); false otherwise. 75-135 of 159 counties a year, rising over time, mostly counties whose registry count falls short as more records lack an address. DPH's note names children aged 19 through 35 months, a template error carried from its child report: by our check the flags fit the adolescent population. DPH asks that all county figures be read as estimates, flagged or not.

Notes & limitations

NULL handling

  • Zero is a real, reported value.

Limitations

County figures cover only adolescents with a Georgia address in the GRITS immunization registry: DPH could assign no county to 50-58% of each year's cohort (its UNKNOWN county, left out of the county rows and counted in every statewide row), so county counts are not county populations and the counties never add up to Georgia. DPH flags 75-135 counties a year (is_population_mismatch) whose registry count is at least 20% off the expected adolescent population (its note says children 19-35 months, a template error: by our check the flags fit the adolescent population) and asks that all county figures be read as estimates. Figures count doses recorded in GRITS, not a survey: doses given out of state or never entered are missed, so coverage can be understated where records are sparse (the race unknown and ethnicity unknown groups are far lower than the rest), and it is not CDC's NIS-Teen survey estimate. The statewide count (num_adolescents) is GRITS records, not Georgia's adolescent population: it runs about 1.4 to 1.6 times the Census estimate of Georgians aged 13-17 (our comparison with the ACS 2020-2024 population aged 5-17 times 5/13), likely because records of adolescents who moved away stay in the registry (our reading; DPH does not say), so the shares are of registry records and can run below a survey of residents. Race is DPH's race regardless of ethnicity (Hispanic adolescents are in their race group, other or unknown) and ethnicity is a separate breakdown; they are not the platform's demographic codes, and the breakdowns are statewide only and never crossed. Consecutive report years share four of their five birth years; birth_year follows one cohort. The 2025 report has about 95,000 fewer records than 2024 (-8.6%; earlier years moved -1.1% to +1.5%), mostly records with no Georgia county, while DPH's methods text is unchanged, so 2024-2025 changes in counts, and part of the statewide coverage rise, may reflect registry cleanup rather than vaccination. The adolescent series is 1 Tdap, 3 IPV, 2 MMR, 2 HepB, 2 varicella and 1 MenACWY per DPH's methods and chart (the report's table notes say 3 HepB) and leaves out HPV and HepA. HepA coverage climbs across the series as cohorts born after routine childhood hepatitis A vaccination began reach 13-17 (our reading; DPH does not say). DPH suppresses nothing: groups as small as 44 adolescents are published as they are, and a 0 is a real 0. Percents are published to 0.1 point. Reports before 2018 sampled 7th graders in schools and are not in this series.
