Overview

Cancer death rates for Georgia and each of its 159 counties, pooled over 2020-2024: the age-adjusted death rate per 100,000 residents (2000 U.S. standard population) with its 95% confidence interval, and the average number of deaths per year, by cancer site (all cancers, 19 named sites and two childhood groups), race/ethnicity (non-Hispanic white, black, American Indian/Alaska Native and Asian/Pacific Islander, and Hispanic) and sex, from the National Cancer Institute and CDC's State Cancer Profiles (deaths from the national death file). Small groups are suppressed by NCI (fewer than 16 deaths over the five years).

Row grain: One row per year, county_fips, tract_geoid, demographic, sex, cancer_site.

Key metric

age_adjusted_death_rate_per_100k — Age-Adjusted Cancer Death Rate (per 100,000) (rate_per_population)

The single headline value most answers want.

Variables

Every column in the fact table. The code is the exact field name the API returns.

ColumnTypeUnitRangeNull?Description
yearYearinteger——noEnd year of the pooled five-year window: 2024 = deaths in 2020-2024. Every figure covers those five years together, not 2024 alone (see year_meaning).

Joins tracts; adds its label columns.

demographicRace/Ethnicitystring——noRace/ethnicity: non-Hispanic groups and Hispanic of any race; 'all' is everyone.
Full description
Race/ethnicity of the decedent (FK to the demographics dimension). Mutually exclusive groups: white, black, native_american (American Indian/Alaska Native) and asian_pacific_islander (Asian and Pacific Islander combined, as NCI publishes it; never split) are non-Hispanic; hispanic is Hispanic of any race. 'all' is every death, including those of unknown Hispanic origin. Sex is on the sex column.

sexSexstring——noSex: all, male or female; sex-specific sites have only their own sex.
Full description
Sex: 'male', 'female', or 'all' (both sexes). Male + female = all for the counts, within rounding. The sex-specific sites (breast_female, cervix, ovary, uterus: female; prostate: male) are published for that sex only and have no 'all' row.

cancer_siteCancer Sitestring——noCancer site of the underlying cause of death; 'all' is every cancer. Sites overlap - pick one.
Full description
Primary cancer site of the underlying cause of death, as State Cancer Profiles groups it: 'all' (all cancer sites, the total), bladder, brain_and_other_nervous_system, breast_female, cervix, colon_and_rectum, esophagus, kidney_and_renal_pelvis, leukemia, liver_and_bile_duct, lung_and_bronchus, melanoma_of_the_skin, non_hodgkin_lymphoma, oral_cavity_and_pharynx, ovary, pancreas, prostate, stomach, thyroid, uterus (corpus and uterus, NOS), and two childhood groups, childhood_under_15 and childhood_under_20 (all cancer sites among children under 15 / under 20; their rates are per 100,000 children of those ages, and the under-20 group contains the under-15 one). The named sites do not cover every cancer and the childhood groups overlap them, so sites never add up: only 'all' is the total. breast_female, cervix, ovary, uterus exist for sex 'female' only and prostate for 'male' only.

age_adjusted_death_rate_per_100kAge-Adjusted Cancer Death Rate (per 100,000)numberrate_per_population—yesCancer deaths per 100,000 residents a year, 2020-2024, age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population.
Full description
Deaths per 100,000 residents per year with the cancer site as the underlying cause, over 2020-2024 together, age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population (20 age groups), as NCI publishes it (rounded to 0.1). Age adjustment makes places with older or younger populations comparable; it is not the share of residents who died. For the sex-specific sites it is per 100,000 women or men, for the childhood groups per 100,000 children under 15 or under 20. Rates never add or average across rows (no population is published to weight them). Small groups can show very high, very uncertain rates: the highest, 886.6 (95% CI 134.2-2,406.5), is Black men in Charlton County, all sites, about 4 deaths a year, preserved as NCI publishes it; read such rates with their intervals. Healthy People 2030 objectives, not served as a column: all sites 122.7, lung_and_bronchus 25.1, breast_female 15.3, prostate 16.9 and colon_and_rectum 8.9 deaths per 100,000; NCI counts an area as meeting one when its rate is below it (its objectives are age-adjusted by slightly different methods).

Wide for small counties and groups; two places whose intervals do not overlap differ by more than chance.

avg_annual_deathsAverage Annual Deathsintegercount—yesAverage number of deaths per year from the cancer site over 2020-2024 (the five-year total divided by five, rounded to a whole number), as NCI publishes it: not a single year's deaths and not the five-year total. A shown 3 can mean 16 or more deaths over the five years. The deaths behind the rate, but not its numerator in the arithmetic sense: the rate is age-adjusted. Adds across counties or race groups only where none is suppressed; never across cancer sites.

Notes & limitations

NULL handling

  • Suppressed cells (values the source withholds, usually for a group too small to report) are NULL, never zero.
  • Zero is a real, reported value.

Limitations

One pooled period, not an annual series: every figure covers Georgia residents' cancer deaths in 2020-2024 together (year 2024 labels the window; rates and counts are five-year averages). State Cancer Profiles serves only its latest window, and the next (2021-2025) shares four of its five years with this one, so never read two windows as year-to-year change. NCI withholds the rate, its 95% confidence interval and the count wherever fewer than 16 deaths were recorded over the five years in the area, sex and race group: NULL here, never estimated or backed out of a total (90% of county rows and every county row for non-Hispanic American Indian/Alaska Native (native_american) residents). Deaths come from the National Center for Health Statistics' national death file (National Vital Statistics System public-use file), by the decedent's county of residence and underlying cause of death; NCI computes the rates with SEER*Stat, age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population in 20 age groups (under 1, 1-4, 5-9, ..., 85-89, 90 and over), over NCI's modified Census population estimates. They cover the same deaths as Georgia DPH's OASIS death figures (the state's own vital records, published as annual counts and rates with OASIS's own population estimates and cause groupings), so the two do not match exactly; OASIS gives single years, this table cancer sites by race and sex in every county. The childhood groups are rates per 100,000 children under 15 (childhood_under_15) or under 20 (childhood_under_20), not per 100,000 residents of all ages, and their deaths are also counted under the named sites they belong to (a child's leukemia death is in leukemia too). breast_female, cervix, ovary, uterus are published for females only and prostate for males only, as rates per 100,000 women or men (no sex='all' row). Race groups: white, black, native_american and asian_pacific_islander (one combined group) are non-Hispanic; hispanic is any race; 'all' also counts deaths of unknown Hispanic origin, so the five groups' counts can add to slightly less than 'all'. avg_annual_deaths is the five-year total divided by five and rounded: a shown 3 can mean 16 or more deaths over the five years. Rates are rounded to 0.1 per 100,000. Not served: NCI's recent 5-year trend (average annual percent change) and its direction, the CI*Rank ranks, the Healthy People 2030 objective flag, the county rural-urban class and the national row. For trends use health/oasis/deaths_by_cause_detailed (Georgia DPH OASIS): annual county deaths and age-adjusted death rates for 2000-2025, for all cancers and 17 of the 21 sites here (not childhood_under_15, childhood_under_20, non_hodgkin_lymphoma or thyroid). tract_geoid is always NULL.
