Race and ethnicity (FK to the demographics dimension, category race), statewide rows only; county rows are all. hispanic is Hispanic or Latino of any race; black, white, asian, pacific_islander, asian_pacific_islander, native_american and multiracial are non-Hispanic (CDC's mutually exclusive categories, as DPH prints them). asian_pacific_islander is 2019-2021 only, when DPH combined Asian and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander; asian and pacific_islander are 2022-2024 only. race_unknown is the statewide count minus the race groups (no race recorded), so the groups add up to all.

num_people_with_hivPeople with HIVintegercount—yesPeople with diagnosed HIV whose most recent address is in the county (or Georgia) at the end of the year, as DPH prints them: the county table's N on county rows; the state people-with-HIV table (Table 5 in 2019-2022, Table 8 in 2023-2024) on state rows, its total equal to the county table's Georgia (Total) in 2023-2024; race_unknown is the total minus the race groups. Includes people in correctional facilities and the Stewart County immigration detention facility. County rows add up to less than the state row. The numerator of people_with_hiv_per_100k.

Full description
People with diagnosed HIV per 100,000 residents, to 0.1. County rows: DPH's published rate (its OHIP population estimate for the year as denominator), NULL on every count under 12 (DPH's stated rule; the rates its 2019-2021 reports printed on such counts are removed, so every year follows one rule). Georgia row: DPH's printed rate in 2023 and 2024; for 2019-2022, which print none, our calculation, the count x 100,000 / the report's printed Georgia population (its general-population table), a method that reproduces the 2023 and 2024 printed rates exactly. Race rows: our calculation the same way with the group's printed population (asian_pacific_islander: Asian plus Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander). Correctional and immigration detention facilities inflate some county rates (Stewart County).

Notes & limitations

NULL handling

  • Suppressed cells (values the source withholds, usually for a group too small to report) are NULL, never zero.
  • Zero is a real, reported value.

Limitations

People in correctional facilities and Stewart County's immigration detention facility are included and can inflate those counties' rates. County rows sum to less than the state: 834 to 1,238 people a year are assigned to no county. Statewide 2019-2022 and all race rates are our calculation. The multiracial rate is the highest race rate, perhaps because case reports and Census-based population figures classify race differently (2023: 5.7% of people with HIV, 2.1% of residents): read it with care. Rates are per 100,000 residents. Counts are DPH's surveillance counts of people diagnosed with HIV by December 31 of the year, not known to have died, whose most recent address is in Georgia, wherever they were diagnosed ('persons living with HIV' in 2019-2020, 'persons with HIV' in 2021, 'people with HIV' from 2022; treated as one measure). DPH censors counts of 1 to 4 (printed '<5'): count and rate are NULL, never 0, and are never backed out of a total. Webster County's 2020 count of 3 was printed uncensored and is kept as published; the rate printed with it is NULL under the rule that follows. DPH calculates no rate on a count under 12 (its stated rule, printed '-', '--' or '---'), applied in its reports from 2022; the 2019-2021 reports printed county rates on counts under 12 anyway (6, 7 and 7 counties), and those are NULL here too, so every year follows the same rule. Our calculation, from DPH's counts and population: count x 100,000 / the report's own Georgia population (its general-population table, OASIS estimates for the year, the denominator DPH's methods name), rounded to 0.1 as DPH prints; it reproduces DPH's printed 2023 (591.1) and 2024 (598.3) statewide rates exactly. Race rows are statewide only and use the group's population from the same table; DPH publishes no race rate. A race rate is withheld under 12 people (DPH's rule), for multiracial before 2023 (no multiracial population printed) and for race_unknown (the statewide count minus the race groups: people with no race recorded). In the 2019 and 2020 reports DPH's breakdowns do not reconcile exactly with its printed total (the age groups sum to about 110 more people), so race_unknown is approximate in those years. Race in surveillance comes from case reports, population race from Census-based estimates. 2019-2021 combine Asian and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (asian_pacific_islander); 2022-2024 split them (asian, pacific_islander): never add or compare across the change. Each report is a snapshot (DPH does not revise earlier years) and is re-issued when corrected (2019-2021 in December 2023; 2023 in March 2026). tract_geoid is always NULL.
