Overview

Years of potential life lost before age 75 (YPLL 75) by Georgia residents, all causes, for each of Georgia's 2,796 census tracts (2020 boundaries) of residence, in 5-year windows from 2001-2005 to 2021-2025, from the Georgia Department of Public Health's OASIS Mapping Tool: each death before 75 adds 75 minus the age at death. Totals, not rates; NULL where a tract had fewer than 5 deaths in a window, and in one more tract (5 or more deaths) of some counties to shield the masked tracts from county totals.

Row grain: One row per year, county_fips, tract_geoid.

Full description
Years of potential life lost before age 75 (YPLL 75), as OASIS publishes it: for each death of a tract resident before 75 in the window, 75 minus the age at death counted at the middle of the year of age (74.5 for an infant death), summed over the window's deaths from all causes. Half-year values; a total, not a rate. NULL where the tract had fewer than 5 deaths in the window (our small-cell mask), and in one more tract (5 or more deaths) of some counties, our complementary suppression to shield the masked tracts from county totals.

Notes & limitations

NULL handling

  • Suppressed cells (values the source withholds, usually for a group too small to report) are NULL, never zero.
  • Zero is a real, reported value.

Limitations

Years of potential life lost before age 75 (YPLL 75), summed over a 5-year window for each census tract's residents: a total, not a rate, so tracts with more people show more years lost. YPLL is NULL wherever the tract had fewer than 5 deaths in the window and in one more tract (5 or more deaths) of some counties, to shield them from county totals (our masks, 24-36 tracts per window); tracts no longer add up to Georgia. For YPLL rates, use the county topic premature_death_ypll_nchs_rankable. Each death before 75 adds 75 minus the age at death, counted at the middle of the year of age (74.5 years for an infant death), so values end in .0 or .5; deaths at 75 or older add nothing. Each row covers a fixed 5-year window (2001-2005 to 2021-2025; year is its end year), summed over the five years, not one year. The windows share no years, but a tract's total can change between windows because its population grew, shrank or aged, not only because early deaths became more or less common. Tract rows only: no county or Georgia rows. The mask is the platform's: OASIS publishes YPLL for tracts with 1-4 deaths, where it can reveal one person's age at death. Before the mask the tracts add up exactly to OASIS's Georgia YPLL 75; no state figure or residual that would reveal the masked tracts is stored. OASIS's county deaths and YPLL (the county OASIS topics, summed over a window) equal the sum of the county's tracts, so in each of the 61 county-windows with a '0-4' tract one more tract, with 5 or more deaths, is NULL too (our complementary suppression, the same tract in both tract topics): a NULL can hold 5 or more deaths, and a county total minus the published tracts is never the '0-4' tracts' own total. Deaths are placed by the tract of residence as OASIS geocodes it, not where the death happened. Every window is on 2020 census tracts: OASIS's Mapping Tool has used 2020 tract boundaries since 2023-12-01, for its earlier windows too (OASIS does not say how it placed earlier deaths on 2020 tracts). The 12 tracts with no 2020 residents (water and special-use areas) still hold the deaths OASIS placed in them; YPLL is shown where they had 5 or more deaths (1 tract in 2001-2005, 2 tracts in 2006-2010, 1 tract in 2011-2015). OASIS publishes no tract rates (no tract population either), so a raw count is not comparable across tracts of different sizes. All causes, all ages, races and sexes: the tract export is served at the Mapping Tool's defaults, with no breakdown. Not comparable head to head with the county YPLL topics, which are single years by cause, with rates. 2025, the newest year of the 2021-2025 window, was added to OASIS on 2026-07-29; OASIS adds a year once its data are closed out and marks no year provisional.
